Elder Skaggs vs Death by stairs - from 11/16/2019

Enjoying the view
This has been another great week filled with fun and interesting experiences. Compared to last week, I actually have content and things to include in this email. It's been such an amazing week.

The sunset
The hike: Saturday, we went to the Living Room again and had a blast. We went the hard way and were able to watch the sunset and get a good workout in. The sunset was amazing. We got up to the top around 5:30, maybe a little bit later. We hung out up there for a little bit then hiked down. Since the sun sets early now, we were hiking down in the dark at 6. There was a little bit of snow and ice left and it made it a little bit dangerous on the way back down. We ended up driving way out of the way to go to Little Ceasar's. However, there were a few sketch people and we felt like we were going to get murdered. Haha. We had a blast though!

Hanging out with old people was a blast again. They are seriously the greatest.

Death by stairs: On Tuesday we had an event for the Church History Department on the 26th floor of the Church Office Building. Afterwards, we all crowded to the elevators and we didn't want to wait, so I suggested we take the stairs down. Well, let's just say, that was a huge mistake. I am still sore, three days later and I can barely walk. I can only imagine what it's like going up the stairs. It was still fun. I enjoyed the exercise.

My comp grew an eye on his belly
Cleaning our apartment: We were told that President Fenn
Clean living room
was going to inspect our apartments sometime this week. In preparation, Elder Jensen and I turned on some music and then cleaned. I took a video and then some photos. If you look at our photos you will see my clean room and made bed, our cleaning living quarters and my mega desk. My mega desk includes my scriptures and a few stuffed animals (just ignore those) and then my white board containing pictures of Jesus; my friend, Natalie; and my friend, Tara, from when she served on her mission. I also have my name tag on there and I have a picture of my cousin who died when he was 2 and my middle name is named after him. We had a great time cleaning and our apartment looks amazing.

Forgot my name: The other day we were talking to some elders and one of them said the
My mega desk. As you can tell I have my
stuffed animals (long story on why I have
those), my scriptures and then my photo
board with Jesus, my nametag, Tara,
Natalie, and my cousin
name James. In response, I said, "Woah, that's my middle name." Then it took me a few seconds and then said again, "Oh wait, my middle name is Jared. James is my brother's middle name." LOL. It was hilarious because I totally forgot that my middle name isn't James and I don't know how I forgot that. But, I guess since I hang out with older people all the time, the memory loss is kicking in early.

New handbook: Also, the church came out with a new handbook. It's super awesome because it's updated and improved and way better than it was before. The old one was created in 2006 and is outdated. It now tells us new policies such as being able to read emails every day, we just can't respond until p-day. We will see what our mission president says about that. I'm excited for the new experience it will bring.

My comp pretended to wrap me up like I
was dead on my bed
Scripture: This week I want to share 2 Nephi 1:20. I don't think I've
Still dead on my bed
shared this one before. It says, "And he hath said: Inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land; but inasmuch as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall be cut off from my presence." I love this scripture because we learn that we must keep the commandments. As we follow the spirit and follow Heavenly Father He will bless us. We must follow Him and we will be able to continue to be more like Him. However, when we fall away, He won't bless us and we won't be able to return to Him. Strive to follow the commandments and become a better person. YOU WILL BE BLESSED FOR IT!

Anyway, it's been a great week. We are going to Rose Park to eat at Chubby's tonight. We are all excited and hopefully it will be good Mexican food. Hope all of you have a great week. I love you all!

Elder Skaggs vs another slow week - from 11/09/2019

Our former assistant
that we saw today
Hello everyone. Nothing exciting at all happened this week. When I say nothing, I mean nothing. I did the normal stuff. However, with 15 weeks left, I just want to share the importance of serving. Serving God, yourself and others.
I love Elder Buers
In life, we will have plenty of opportunity to serve others, ourselves, and God. These opportunities arise daily. It's no secret that we will be able to serve others. It's not a questionable idea, it's something that we know will happen every day. With these opportunities that arise daily, our outlook and approach is what will make the difference. Our attitude is what determines the end result.

If we come to a situation that requires us to give our time or sacrifice something, it sometimes becomes dreadful. We may not enjoy the thing we are doing. But, one thing we often overlook is that the reason it is so boring or mundane is because we are looking at it all wrong. We need to look at everything in a better light. We need to look at the end result. Looking at the positive outcome instead of thinking about ourselves will help you perform the task and duty you are asked to do. You will learn to love it.
I have learned that no matter the act of service I am doing, I am able to find so much joy in it. On the mission I have been able to plant flowers on temple square, work at a food bank, pack meals for those who are homeless or struggling, help people move, help pull weeds, and so much more. In addition, my assignments have not always been the most fun. But, as I have looked at things on the bright side and seen the blessings, I have come to know that the service I do is worth it.
It looks like I was trying to do the tango,
except there was no one there
Yes, I loved riding my bike in Vegas, however, sometimes I hated riding up on the hill on Allen Lane, right past Anne Road, especially when it's 20 to 30 mph winds. Only Rockhard (my trainer) will understand how difficult it was for me that day. And sometimes I got tired having to ride 10 to 15 miles a day. But, I looked at the positive side. I first saw how I was losing weight. I was losing some of the weight that I had gained and wanted to so earnestly lose. I had so many opportunities to meet people and serve more people. Throughout my time in Vegas, and my time here in this mission, I have grown closer to those around me and my Heavenly Father because of service.
Umm, probably more dance moves
When I first arrived here, I wanted to be anywhere, but here. I didn't want to serve in the capacity that I did. But, as time has gone on, I have changed that perspective. I have learned that it doesn't matter how I serve, all that matters is that I serve
This concept applies to everyone. You don't have to be religious or a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to serve others. Serve out of a sincere desire to just love others. Don't compare your service to other people and compare your accomplishments. You will never be good enough if you compare your successes to those around you. We are not going to achieve the same as everyone else. We will do things that others can't do and others will do things that you can't.
I guess I was posing for some reason
You will find so much more joy in doing things for others when you do it for the right reason. As you discover what you can do and you tell yourself that you can do it, then you will do it. Remember that you must first believe in yourself. Serve yourself by believing in yourself. You can't expect to go out and love and serve others if you don't love and serve yourself. Say nice things to yourself and lift yourself up. Don't talk negatively about everything you do.
As you will come to do this, you will have such an exceedingly strong joy that you will feel better all the time. Look for ways to serve. Go out of your way to see how you can help those around you. Find opportunities. It doesn't mean you have to go and sign up for a service project, just find something your family members or maybe your neighbor needs help on. Look for small ways to help. You can serve yourself, those around you and God in ways that you would have never imagined, until you actually do it.
I hope each of you are able to find ways to serve and love others. Have a great week everyone! Enjoy these screenshots I took from videos of us playing dodgeball in morning exercise. I laughed at myself the whole entire time. Not with myself, but at myself. Yes, I made fun of myself. Haha.
Peace out!
