Welcome to another update in the life of Elder Skaggs while serving his mission in Salt Lake City. I only have about 26 of these left. Wow!! Not that I'm counting. I shouldn't be trunky, so we shall ignore that and not bring it up. But, I will mention
that I turn 21 in a month. I am finally legal to do most things except I still can't rent a car. I don't blame car rental companies. I don't even trust myself when I drive. Anyway, I hope you are all doing well. I assume you guys all read my emails or it goes
straight to the spam folder. If someone doesn't email me back (especially after I email them first), I assume they've just died. So at this point, I assume that majority of you are dead and I'm going to be really sad when I get home. I hope that's not the
case though. Onto better things...
My dad wants me to talk about what I do, like my projects or my daily schedule. Quite honestly, I don't even know what I do. I'm confused as to my own duties. But, I shall explain them anyway.
A typical day of mine consist of an annoying noise beeping at me to wake up in the middle of an amazing dream. Then some days I proceed to go to the stake center where the elders get together and do a bunch of weird stuff to our muscles and do painful
things like stretching and "exercising". After that, I feed my body with food. Then I get ready for the day, which involves having super hot hydrogen Dioxide spraying over my whole entire body and putting on clothes.
My zone work actually just changed this week and it's super awesome. I originally sat on a computer all day and indexed a mission newsletter printed in the early 1900s called the Liahona, look it up on Family Search's catalog. It's slow and burning brain
cells while looking at a computer screen is boring. But, I'm good at my job. It also reminds me that I'm currently doing that exact thing by emailing right now. However, about three times a week we do circulation. We deliver the items that employees order for
research. The paid and trained employees go to the vaults and get them and then bring them back to a room and we deliver them. I have delivered things such as a huge book filled with patriarchal blessings that were given in the late 1800's to original copies
of the hymnbook and Book of Commandments. It's pretty fun.
My new assignment though, for the next few days, is scanning. What I do is scan super old documents. We grab a folder of the stuff we need to scan and then set it down on a table and then we carefully pull out the first one. We place it on the scanner and then it scans
through. I'm on the wide format scanner, which usually means I'm scanning the super old stuff. Like, right now we are scanning the blueprints for the remodeling of the parking garage of the Hotel Utah. I think it's super cool because I'm seeing original plans
and designs of buildings I work in and go to. After it scans, the elder I work with does some computer magic and the paid employees review it. My companion is right around the corner working on another project. He does the bio sketch, which is writing short
biographies about the people who owned certain items we have in the museum and the library.
He just finished Orson Hyde and really enjoyed that. He was the one who dedicated Jerusalem for the gathering of Israel and missionary work. He also did a ton of other amazing things. He apostatized a couple times, but came back to the church in the end.
And he served as an apostle for many years. We wanted to convince president to let us go to Jerusalem for "further research", but we figured that would be a long shot. I did visit Jerusalem by way of Google maps though. Pretty cool place.
My work isn't too bad. Yes, I don't get to preach the gospel to people, but I am serving the Lord in different ways. It doesn't matter how I serve him, it only matters that I do serve him. I don't think we are judged based off whether or not we served
a proselyting mission, service mission, or a different type of mission. It's also interesting how your point of view can change. When I first came out here, I convinced myself that we are a full time mission and not a service mission. And that's actually true.
So, I convinced myself correctly and didn't lie to myself. Even though service missions are awesome, we are not one. However, I have finally come to accept that we sort of are a service mission. We obey the rules and the white handbook of a full time missionary,
but we do the work of a service mission. Well, some of it. The Family History Library does the work of a full time mission. So, in part we are a full time service mission, however, that defeats the purpose of a service mission. So, once again, it's really
complicated.
Also, if anyone wants to tell me that because we don't preach the gospel to people, we aren't a "real mission", I'll share some shocking news. The Temple Square sisters are now serving part of their time on Sunday afternoons and Monday evenings working on
the first floor of the Family History Library. So, are they not technically "real missionaries" for the time they do that? Nah, they're still real missionaries, which makes us real missionaries, too. I hope that made sense. Anyway, I hope I helped you all
see what I do on my mission.
A sad moment this week was saying goodbye to Sister Bell. She's from Westminster, CA and lived next to us for a month. She just completed her mission and it was sad to say goodbye. She's been so great to us. We also said goodbye to Sister Smith and the Taylor's
(our old zone leaders). It's sad to see people leave to go home, but they will always be friends. Friends are amazing. Well, most of the time.
We also went to the temple yesterday and afterwords we were asked to do some sealings. We found out that we were doing names for Sister Wendy Nelson, the prophet's wife. It was super awesome to know that I was doing names for her. I felt extra special
to be doing names for her and knew that I was doing something good.

Anyway, I still don't know what the heck I do. I'm just trying not to destroy the world and trying to figure out how many grave sites I will have to visit after the mission since it seems like most of you are dead. Also, please do me a favor everyone!!!!!!!!!!!
DON'T BE STUPID AND STORM AREA 51! I hope I don't have any friends that are dumb enough to do that. Let me know if there is anything I can do for any of you. I can't promise I can do anything, but we will see. I hope the humor in this email didn't make it
too stupid. I LOVE YOU ALL AND MISS YOU ALL!!! You are loved by Heavenly Father and can do amazing things!! Don't give up!! I am here for anyone who needs it. Well, I'm only here once a week for a few hours, but you can write me if you need any love or support
or email me or chat with me on Saturdays. Hope to talk to you all soon!
Love,
